The VPS Landscape in 2025
Choosing a VPS provider is one of the most consequential infrastructure decisions you'll make. We've run production workloads on all three — here's our honest comparison.
Pricing: Hetzner Wins Decisively
For equivalent specs, Hetzner is typically 40-60% cheaper than DigitalOcean and Linode.
4 vCPU / 8GB RAM tier:
- Hetzner CPX31: $14.49/mo
- DigitalOcean: $48/mo (Premium) or $56/mo (CPU-Optimized)
- Linode: $36/mo (Shared) or $72/mo (Dedicated)
8 vCPU / 16GB RAM tier:
- Hetzner CPX42: $21.99/mo
- DigitalOcean: $96/mo
- Linode: $72/mo (Shared)
The gap is massive and it compounds when you're running multiple servers.
Performance: Comparable at the Hardware Level
All three providers use modern AMD EPYC or Intel Xeon processors. In our benchmarks:
- CPU (Geekbench): Within 5-10% of each other for equivalent vCPU counts
- Storage I/O: All offer NVMe, with similar sequential read/write speeds
- Network: Hetzner includes 20TB, DigitalOcean includes 4-8TB, Linode includes 8TB
Developer Experience
DigitalOcean has the best developer experience. Their UI is polished, documentation is world-class, and managed services (App Platform, Managed Databases, Spaces) reduce operational burden.
Linode (now Akamai) offers a solid console and good docs. Their managed Kubernetes offering is competitive.
Hetzner has a functional but no-frills console. Documentation is adequate but not as rich. The API is well-designed and their CLI tool works well.
Managed Services
| Service | Hetzner | DigitalOcean | Linode |
|---|---|---|---|
| Managed DB | No | Yes (Postgres, MySQL, Redis) | Yes (MySQL, Postgres) |
| Managed K8s | No | Yes | Yes |
| Object Storage | Yes | Yes (Spaces) | Yes |
| Load Balancers | Yes | Yes | Yes (NodeBalancers) |
| CDN | No | Yes (built into Spaces) | Yes (Akamai CDN) |
| Serverless | No | Yes (Functions) | No |
When to Choose Each
Choose Hetzner when:
- Budget is a priority and you're comfortable with self-management
- You need maximum resources per dollar
- You're running self-hosted platforms (Coolify, Mailcow, GitLab)
- European data residency is needed
Choose DigitalOcean when:
- Developer experience and managed services matter more than raw cost
- You want managed databases and don't want to run PostgreSQL yourself
- Your team is small and operational overhead is a concern
Choose Linode when:
- You want the Akamai CDN integration
- Managed Kubernetes is a requirement
- You need more datacenter locations than Hetzner offers
Our Take
For self-hosters and anyone comfortable with Linux administration, Hetzner is the clear winner on value. You get 2-3x the resources, and with tools like Coolify, the self-management overhead is minimal.
If you want everything managed and are willing to pay 2-3x more for convenience, DigitalOcean is excellent.
